We wouldn't suddenly decide that a similar-sized rather unoccupied portion of, say, Arizona, was so damned important if it were suddenly taken over by Mexicans?

Well, if you are talking about Phoenix or Tuscon or the Grand Canyon, sure.

But if it was an uninhabited, desolate area, the people of the United States had been just liberated by the Canadians, and the Canadians said, "Hey, we need a space the size of Vermont to put the Jews" -- I would fully expect the people of the United States would be fine with it.

I certainly don't expect the people of Arizona would, after 50 or more years, be raising their children to strap on bombs and get on buses full of school children and detonate themselves.
