Why would you pay for gastric bypass but not pay people to lose weight? I'd pay for both. When I use something like diabetes as an example of why pushing people to be thinner saves costs, it isn't supposed to exclude the fact that I think all sorts of other things also are good reasons (and good economic reasons) to pay people to lose weight- from lower cancer risks, to allowing people to be more mobile (and thus work more- we know heavy people have more sick days and are less productive), to lower risks of stroke and heart disease, lower rated of gallbladder disease, gout, osteoarthritis, breathing problems- like apnea, and a host of other problems.
