Yes they would, also turning weapons-grade stuff into non-proliferative low-grade waste plus huge amounts of power would improve the politics too, well Thorium Power is working on this, currently generating a few millions consulting for an undisclosed 'foreign government-owned entity' -

IMHO the fears from nuclear energy are exaggerated well over the actual dangers - as proof we can take a page form France energy supply
