The installed capacity in the USA has grown on average about 3% a year for the last 6 years.<<

What does the current percentage of renewable plants have to do with potential future capacity?

We need more electricity. Granted. We can get it from various different sources. Does it not make sense to put our money and our investment into building plants that will continue to provide electricity long after there is no more coal or natural gas to be had at a reasonable cost?

One doesn't even have to look at the environmental concerns. Just looking at it from the standpoint of spending money in the short term vs. investing for the long term, solar thermal, wind, and other alternatives make sense.
