There are many reasons for higher costs in the US and I have talked about several of them:

1. Higher administrative costs due to the hodge podge of public/private systems in the US including the for-profit health insurance system. I have heard that the difference between Medicare overhead and private insurance overhead ranges from as high as 10 times to around 7 times.

2. Higher rate of medical errors due to the lack of a centralized database. Having a system of denial of coverage and denial of payment makes providing complete medical information to the hodge podge system too high a risk.

3. Uninsured and underinsured using the ER as the medical care of first resort.

4. AMA actively lobbying to protect the market in doctors thus artificially inflating their value.

5. Medical malpractice and doctors and nurses with lousy bedside manners. Protection of poor doctors and nurses by their profession.

6. Over use of drugs. Failure to negotiate for better drug prices. Bought and paid for FDA.

7. Too much industrialized food, too little exercise, too many calories, too much stress, insufficient sleep, etc.

Etc. I'm sure there are more.

Many of these are related to the private health care system. The market isn't efficient or effective which should make true conservatives very upset at the current system.
