I don't know if all tariffs hurt the US. Some may, some may not and others may simply be a wash helping parts of the economy but hurting others. The threat of tariffs may help in getting other countries to not impose them on our goods so getting rid of them unilaterally may not be a good idea. You say you dislike transfers. Why should childless couples or single people be taxed to provide education for other people's children? Why do you exempt education of children (when there are private schools and home schooling available) from your dislike of transfers? No, the oil and gas bill isn't just about tax reductions. Even if it was, what is the difference in practical terms of getting to pay lower taxes or getting a check for the same amount from the federal government? citizen.org FedEx and UPS deliver to specific addresses when they have packages to pick up or deliver. They do not show up at every address six days a week. I should have been more specific. Do FedEx and UPS want to get into the 41 cent delivery business? You should be happy that SS sends checks to the wealthy because it is not an entitlement program, it is a mandatory insurance program. It is not a transfer program, it is a mandatory insurance program. If, as you say, millions rely on SS then getting rid of it will require many more transfer programs unless you enjoy the sight of old people starving as they were before SS. It is better to make people pay into the program throughout their work life to avoid such problems in the future. No, for the umpteenth time, simply making SS a fair tax and taxing all income and not just up to the first $100K or so would make it solvent as far as the eye can see. I have no idea what you are trying to say about for profit grocery stores or public schools. My point, as above, is that you dislike transfers but property taxes going to public education is a transfer. Why is that acceptable to you when other transfers are not?
