Elroy looking to energy in one demission you can easily arrive to the wrong conclusion. Ethanol from corn has already proven my point.

Most Western world countries pay immense amounts of money for their military expenses and security services - what are the direct benefits from those expenses - none (aside from those making a living from defense spending)- there are only intangible benefits and the illusion of safety and promotion of your economic interests.

At present time there is a substantial dislocation of capital which in turn many will rightfully claimed, that this dislocation can harm national interests and will induce more military expenditure in the future.

This is only one example that the issue of energy must be treated at the same level of consideration like military power and not only on a pure commercial / economic basis.

Lets assume that I am correct and Russia with its historic imperialistic desires and national pride amasses enough money from the natural resources mostly gas and oil to challenge as in the past Western Europe by expanding their sphere of influence and curtailing EU and US exports by promoting their own products and way of life – what then?

China is already engaged in covert activity in Africa and S. America it only does not makes the headlines, Zimbabwe is one example where China skirted the rules, the other is Sudan which if not for China and Russia involvement the crisis would have been solved and not so many people would have died. And if you think that Russia stays idle in those and other regions you are badly mistaken.

Same with Iran who tries to take over the Gulf States to gain regional dominance and how many $$$ the US and EU is spending to keep the region safe? Afghanistan is only a Taliban problem or is the issue more complex?

Now just think that those $$$ and some more were allocated for a safe and orderly Nuclear Power system as you mention is run in France.

Tell me what you prefer spending tax money on military hardware bullets, projectiles and bombs, or a safe system for energy from nuclear power with very costly disposal of nuclear waste by spacecraft crashing / burning into the sun.

I did not tackle the health effects issue and the cost of polluting the atmosphere which endangers our food supply and habitat like forests and pastures etc.

In summary coal in excess is very bad for you as is crude oil, the problem is the lobby behind those resources and human nature which cannot be trusted :(
