I would rather they use pot the night before than alcohol ... people usually sleep pretty good after using pot.

I want a well-rested surgeon.

I merely asked, since your *observations* were so very different from my own, and from Rambi's and from everyone here. It's not like you've lived in the world in isolation- we've all been here too, and we all know people who smoke. But only you claim to know they all turned out to be horrible failures. So we might wonder about your background, and just where you met all these deadenders...

If I said everyone I ever knew who drank coffee ended up in prison, you might wonder about the people I hung around with- you might VALIDLY wonder about that.

I wasn't trying to stereotype you and I'm sorry if it came off that way.

I was only asking if you've ever smoked weed, because the article you linked to was clueless.

BTW, I'm not a liberal. My stand on fiscal matters is more conservative than most conservatives and borders on libertarian, which is how I usually vote in POTUS elections.

No responsible pilot drinks before flying, nor would they smoke. THey have random drug tests anyway, and most pilots are very careful to stay within the rules. And a good surgeon wouldn't place patients at risk if he thought smoking or drinking would compromise his skills.

You're conflating potsmoking with irresponsibility.

I don't know many adults who smoke now- though I know a few- mostly because it's illegal, and they don't want to break laws. But those who do, are quite successful. The two I KNOW smoke- one is a business man, the other an engineer.

Abusing marijuana, abusing alcohol, abusing suntanning. People make choices. What most of us are saying is that it's not in and of itself something that needs to be illegal anymore than alcohol. And it certainly should be available for medical usage.

I would be willing to bet that not many can thrive on daily use for many years without having it impact their health and performance.

The folks I know who use tend to be recreational smokers; weekends, parties and special events. I don't think its healthy to overindulge any substance.

And your point about surgeons and pilots is well-taken; they have no business smoking. I doubt the type of personality required for success in such fields lends itself to sitting in a corner listening to Pink Floyd on the earphones anyway.

But that is no reason to deny other adults the choice, IMO.

BTW, it is drunk drivers who scare me. Dopers drive like the little old lady from Pasadena.

Let's see, first you object because you felt stereotyped.

Then... you dismiss with stereotypes:

"Government workers and academia, that explains allot."

"Sorry I dont find the 1960's attitude cool."

Regardless of the era, I find irony cool.

Meet Irv Rosenfeld.

Irv is a stock broker in Florida. He handles millions of dollars for clients every day. His clients are aware that he is a medical marijuana consumer.

He has a rare disorder that causes tumors to grow at the end of all of his long bones.

He began consuming marijuana and the tumors stopped.

Did you get that? THE TUMORS STOPPED

Our federal government has supplied him with marijuana every day for the last twenty five years. He consumes about 1.5 ounces per week.
