Any clues as to what is causing this epidemic of destructive behavior among southern women? Is it hopelessness?

Also life expectancy for all broad groups has continued to go up in the US. Its not like you can even point to one state, and say life expectancy is going down. The results where just on the county levels, and where for 5% of the counties for women, and about a third of a percent for men. The severe effects (with the relatively sizable drops KyrosL mentioned, where only for a subset of those counties, not for all of them. Than if you weight the counties by population and the percentage goes down from there because the effect was concentrated in rural counties.
