Copper is hard to beat for electric power collection, distribution and utilization.. The big fuss the copper bears make about a "bubble" in copper prices because of a US housing downturn reducing plumbing demand ignores completely the huge copper demand created by building, upgrading and modifying electric power generation and distribution.

No other metal works as well in the application and it's not just the transmission wires (which are obvious) but the fact that every motor, transformer and switch also needs copper and plenty of it....

Electric power is here and now; it can replace a significant proportion of the current fossil fuel usage and it can be generated by means that don't require the burning of fossil fuels. It's the obvious first line of defence against deterioration of living standards due to depletion of fossil fuels but it will require a significant upgrade in the generation and distribution systems in order to achieve that goal.
