Wright's sermons were all as full of invective as the ones that we've seen on YouTube, and that Barack Obama had sat and listened to that kind of thing every week for twenty years, I might reach some of the same conclusions you have reached. But I have dug a bit more deeply. I've seen dozens of other sermons by Wright that can only be classified as mainstream Christian. I've read the words of and seen interviews with both black and white parishioners of Trinity, who all say that the few sermons that have caused all the fuss aren't representative of the whole. Your own description of a "black american narrative" and a "white american narrative" seems deeply flawed to me. I'm white, and I think that unfortunately there's quite a bit of racism left in America. It's much less institutionalized, it's less overt, but it still exists. I'm not denying there has been tremendous progress, but it simply would not have been possible for the level of racism in this country to go from legal segregation in the sixties to negligible levels today. Even the whole idea that there's a "black american narrative" and a "white american narrative" is questionable. That's just too great a generalization. White people don't all see the world the same way any more than black people do. And you say that this "white american narrative" of yours is not the message preached by Rev. Wright? It seems odd to expect him to view the world exactly as you do, given that his experience, and that of his parishioners, is very different from yours. Once again, I'll ask you. How many of Rev. Wright's sermons have you listened to? Have you ever listened to one complete one? How many have you heard excerpts from? Here's a shocking clip from one of his sermons. See what you make of this:youtube.com And by the way, did you listen to Obama's whole speech on race, or did you just base your reaction on a few soundbites? Did you hear or read exactly what he did say with respect to Rev. Wright's words? If not, you really have no basis for judging him. By the way, Wright himself, when asked about Obama's response to his 9/11 sermon said, "He wasn't there. He didn't hear the whole thing." - Allen
