It's a very fundamental issue. If we allow our elections to be petty, spiteful train wrecks based on trivia and distractions, we will continue to produce 50.x% "victories" with little hope of changing any fundamental directions for the country. The irony is that both left and right will be sorely disappointed by the lack of action on their key agenda items. Energy, healthcare, immigration, entitlement programs, Iraq, it all just grinds and stumbles along on a road to nowhere. And the pity is that there isn't a larger group of voters demanding something better. I look at the flow of posts on SI and realize why this style of electioneering works. It pleases and entertains. Once again to quote and praise Karen's wisdom, we are getting the governments we clamor for, so they are what we deserve. Crying about them after the fact is pretty silly for everyone who stands up and cheers the process right now.
