What happens with people like Obama is that they cloister themselves with like-thinkers and consequently lose any kind of compass on where their group-think views may fall on the political spectrum. Obama has only been in politics for 12 years and in national politics for 3 years. He has lived all his life in the kind of areas where you never meet a Republican. He just didn't know the heartland. He was speaking to one of his cloistered groups of like-thinkers. I'm sure he's made many of the same comments over cocktails with friendlies. It's totally CW in San Francisco or Cambridge. Would not raise an eyebrow.
