BS, with the US$ taking a pounding, I dare say Canadians are relatively wealthy, so it's not surprising that the more expensive car plant is shut down. Did CAW local 222 president Chris Buckley tell the company that his union would take a 50% pay cut? No, of course not.

<That is the most efficient car plant in North America apparently and it's being cut. >

"Efficient" obviously means different things to different people. The Toyota car factories being built are surely more efficient. Toyota sales are increasing, so perhaps Chris Buckley's union isn't as efficient as they think.

My brother in law was a pilot for Ansett. The union decided they would not have their conditions tightened, having to work more hours for example. Heck, 10 hours flying time a month is exhausting you know, let alone 20 hours a week. So the union went on strike, much to my brother in law's dismay. He ended up as a strike breaker. The union did stand-over tactics such as walking alongside him through airports, parking at the end of his driveway - bullies and criminals are like that. They didn't dare actually make threats, or they might find themselves in court.

The airline went broke. The pilots were shocked to find market conditions didn't enable them to simply get other jobs. It took a couple of years for him to get work at lower pay rates.

The union caused a lot of economic destruction because of their greed and ignorance.
