The bottleneck in many IT systems is, that harddisks can do 100 I/O operations per second, whereas RAM, CPUs, networks etc. can do a lot more than 100 operations per second.

With a transactional file system, the user actually waits for the harddisk to complete a number of I/O operations when writing data.
