I agree, Allen, about the bluntness and the absolute character of the "divorce." As for Trinity Church and what kind of reception, it might not be that bad. I think Wright may well have made that reentry for Obama plausible. It's, if I understood correctly, a largely "mainstream, black middle class church." The MSNBC anchor who had attended there several times said she had never heard anything like the snippets or Wright's Q&A on Monday when she visited the church.

I thought Obama's reinterpretation of the liberation theology question showed more theological sophistication than he wished to credit himself by labeling it "social gospel" theology. That's much more acceptable, of course.

As for costing him a small percentage of the black vote, I suspect you are right. But it may be a very small percentage. Wright did him a favor with his Monday performance.
