There is a lot of promise in solar technologies. I will not be surprised if we have viable large scale solar power plant designs, as well as units to power individual homes in most geographies within a decade. In the meantime, it wouldn't hurt walking, riding bicycles, and doubling up on car rides.

>>how sudden will be the weaning from cheap oil for the world as a whole<<

Depends on whether global oil production has a sharp peak and rapid fall, or a long plateau. I lean toward a plateau. Oil is so valuable that people will pay a lot more for it, and that will encourage a lot of extraordinary production effort.

>>the percentage of income going to energy will rise<<

Yes, but people will respond by cutting out all sorts of wasteful stuff like big cars, fancy boats, exotic vacations, bottled water, etc.

>>a meaningfully hefty tax on all fossil fuels consumed and/or produced within a country<<

"Inflation is the cruelest tax"
