JF, > What's your take?

Nature and nurture.

No one wants to talk about the nature part (i.e. genetics) when it comes to IQ. No minority wants to believe that they're genetically predestined to be one way or the other. But hey, when it comes to the NBA, for example, nature's role is a given. Otherwise we'd see a lot more Asians in the NBA than just Yao Ming.

Then there's the nurture part. Asians in general value education a LOT, and this has deep roots in culture. Our parents didn't have to worry about us Asian kids getting knocked up, because we're too busy trying to get straight A's. Anything less would have been unacceptable. Many other Asian kids grew up in the same environment, so peer pressure from underachievers was limited.

Anyway, my explanation is only partial, but the point is that Asians were able to make it without starting rich. I'm not stupid enough to think that money makes no difference whatsoever, but people will have to own up to their own circumstances and make the best of it.
