When did Krugman do a political hit job? He gets published because of his status as an academic. He gets read and quoted because of that and because people agree with what he says. His 'authority' comes from having spent the time researching and understanding the subjects he writes about. Most of us don't have that kind of time so we do give more credence to those who do. I also think Krugman is personally much smarter than the run of the mill person. I have that opinion from his writing and that he has a good job as an academic that most people would not be able to fill. George Bush is also an 'authority' figure but I think he is a blithering idiot and a nasty excuse for a human being. If he says that it is raining outside, I would have to go check for myself.
