I don't attend the church. It's not really for me to characterize it. What I know of it doesn't scare me.

I know a lot more about Latin American liberation theology- but even there, it differs a lot region to region, and I wouldn't want to try to characterize it. Firstly, I'm not religious- so right there I'm an outsider, and I'm incapable of understanding religious experience. Secondly I'm white- and although I wish I could understand the black experience (and every other experience I'm not a part of) - I know I cannot.

I could characterize the movement as an agnostic outsider- but you can do that for yourself. Read about it. It's not like my characterizations are going to do anything for you anyway. You're much more likely to believe yourself- so read about it, and come to your own conclusions. We aren't likely to agree on those anyway- so there's no need to share. I don't see the point.

I'd put the Black Liberation movement on the other end of the spectrum with Pat Robertson, who predicted the end of the world was coming in 1982. He's a Southern Baptist, as John McCain claims to be. McCain denounced Robertson and Jerry Falwell in 2000, but has since decided to make nice with Robertson.
One other interesting item on McCain. He has attended a Baptist Church in Phoenix for years, but never actually joined. Since he was raised Episcopalian, he apparently doesn't go in for the full water immersion baptism.
