"Most of the on-patent drugs are unique"

Nonsense - you agreed earlier that a lot are just reformulated off patent drugs. Many drugs from different companies serve the same need - look at the zoo of on-patent drugs for depression, all in the Prozac family.

* Fluoxetine (Prozac) -off patent
* Fluvoxamine (Luvox)
* Sertraline (Zoloft)
* Paroxetine (Paxil) -off patent
* Escitalopram (Lexapro)
* Citalopram (Celexa)

By unique drug, I meant it was the ONLY one available to meet a medical problem. I use one such, Lantus insulin, which is timed release, and only requires me to inject once a day. Other than that, all the drugs I take are generic.

As for generic drugs all costing about the same from different suppliers, as a consumer of them, I can tell you from personal experience this isn't true. Shopping pays off - so would negotiating.
