Not so in this case. Insulin isn't a drug, it's a natural hormone. That's why it has to be injected - if it was in a pill, we'd digest it.

Avantis did some great work making it timed-release in injectable form - it crystalizes within the adipose tissue and time releases through the blood.

Pretty much. You can generally tell when the patent is running out because the XR version pops up.
