You're conclusions are correct. Hillary is pandering and McCain doesn't know much about economics, so probably honestly believes it's a good idea. The real question is whether American's are buying the pandering or not? My guess is that they are buying it hook, line, and sinker. One thing this election has taught me is that there are an awful lot of uneducated folks out there and an awful lot of folks who don't have time or the inclination to do their own critical analysis. As such, they take what these politicians say as gospel. 2 out of 3 of the candidates are saying a gas tax moratorium is a good idea. Therefore, I'd bet most of America thinks so too. So are we going to elect Obama and fix the educational system in this country? That's what I want to know.

These politicians just look around to see who they can attack for the "good of the pander". What happens when Obama raises the cap gain tax to 28%? BTW, you're absolutely right about the effect of taxes on consumption. Look what happened to real estate after 1996.
