Obama knows that the US is overwhelmingly Christian, which make this this issue important, but Trinity is the only contact he's ever had with religion (except for a madras when he was a kid - maybe or maybe not). So he has no idea if what he's hearing at Trinity is unique or typical so has no experience to judge how best to play this. Advisors have to tell him. Plus, I think he has moved his entire life in circles where the only criticism of Wright came from other blacks. Left-wing whites either sympathize with this stuff or give it a pass. So I don't think his experience warned him of the political reaction.
