It's actually not easy to find things that the Dalai Lama has written, himself, most of the English language books available are collaborations with English speaking authors.

I've read pretty much all of them, and they report dialogue with him but it's clearly paraphrased.

This is why I prefer listening to his speeches and watching videos of him giving speeches, it's straight from his own mouth.

My advice, go to his website, read some of his essays, listen to some of his speeches, and you'll learn quite a bit of what he's about. Personally I skip the stuff about religion and focus on the stuff about human nature and our dealings with each other here on earth.

I got interested in him when American doctors started reporting research on the extremely positive effects of Tibetan Buddhist meditation on cognition and mental health. Emory Medical School recently appointed him to the position of Presidential Distinguished Professor for a research institute they just opened and the installation ceremony was quite interesting to me.

There are some lectures at Stanford available on the web, too. Not sure if I can find them before the edit window closes.

He's a very warm person, very positive, in fact, lovable. Loving, generous, kind, decent. Interacting with him brings smiles to the faces of everybody he meets. It's quite interesting.

There's also a Dalai Lama blog.
