One caveat on the statement that the traditional IRA is taxed at the regular rate. I believe that is only true if the money in there has been from tax deductions claimed on one's 1040.

If it is from a contribution for which a tax deduction is not claimed (after tax money) and one files a form 8606 each year to document this than one's withdrawal is apportioned for tax purposes between the percentage of money contributed by after taxed money and before taxed money. At least this is my information and belief as to why I have been filing an 8606 each year and keeping track of the culmulative total of after tax money I have contributed to the IRA.
