Many on the internatinal anti-american left had already picked up on this. Meanwhile saddam was raking in the bucks. He was a bad dude. Look you guys won the debate but it wasnt ever a slam dunk. "Sanctions would have crumbled for humanitarian reasons if nothing else." I am not so sure. There are those who paint me as an ueber leftist. During the 1990's, I traveled an awful lot. I was approached more than once in airports by people who were looking for signatures to lift the sanctions on Iraq. I walked away every time. While I could sympathize with the problems that the sanctions imposed, the only reason why they were so severe is because Saddam refused to play ball. Now, granted, I realized that the average Iraqi had no control over the situation. But, that doesn't matter. As a country we can only deal with the leadership. Our NGO's can work with the people, but official policy has to deal with the governments. If that doesn't work out, then the people are screwed. I can't help that. Now some, like Brumar, like to pretend that those on the left are willing to bend with every breeze. Maybe it is true. If so, I really am not on the left. Because I don't bend. Or maybe the narrative is wrong. I don't really care. In my mind, labels are for those who don't understand the issues. I just know what I know.
