Thanks for the education JGoren, I admit my comment was somewhat flippant. I am not familiar with different practises related to writing checks (or especially placing conditions on the reverse side of the check), as I have never written one myself. I do remember receiving some gift checks when I graduated in 1979, but from then on I have only used electronic money (with debet or credit cards, and since 1990's also using home pc) or plain cash.
