Incentivize, yes. Particularly when majority consensus is reached.

That's not very "poll-driven." That's government deciding what's best for society and telling them, "If you don't like it, tough. We're a fucking society and we're all in this together."

The government would be following the will of people....well most people anyway.

By the way, the point isn't to denounce these efforts (sometimes I wish government displayed such backbone on certain issues). Instead, it's to show just how foolish it is to consider positions to be "centrist" simply based on the changing winds of public opinion.

We are beyond opinion on this topic.

That's pretty much what government is for; to impose the will of the majority on the minority when it's important. There is a minority that believes child molestation is just fine, but the majority (through the government) says "no".
