What I don't like about my suggestion is that cutting income taxes and increasing gasoline tax is unfair on people [like me] who worked, paid tax on their income, then saved, planning to spend their money later on a rainy day when times were tougher.

Not only did I pay high income taxes, I now would have to pay high consumption taxes too. That gives incentive to people to be wastrels and spend it all now before some dopey government person comes up with such an idea.
