<<<"In 1963 Laura Welch was involved in a car accident when she ran a stop sign and crashed into another car, killing a friend and classmate, Michael Dutton Douglas, who was driving the other car. I wonder if my old friend Jessica Fletcher could look a little deeper into the story <gggg>.

I'm not at all surprised. A small town, a nice family, a teenaged new driver NOT drinking. Teenagers do wacky, wild things, especially when it comes to driving. Having gone through two of my own and all their friends, I have seen more than I like of careless accidents. I am sure we all have. Sometimes it's funny, like the time CW followed his girlfriend through a field to go "mudding". She had a 4 wheel drive.
He didn't.
We got a call from him and had to get a towtruck at 10 at night to haul him out of the field where he was stuck in 12 inches of goop.
"What were you THINKING?" we asked.
"I dunno. I thought it would be fun."

I seem to remember the accident coming up during the election, but not gaining any traction, which is an excellent thing, imo. How on earth could you hold a 16 year old responsible for what the law enforcement did in her hometown? She went on to be a responsible, educated caring adult. It wasn't exactly the stuff of Chappaquiddick.

neither driver was drinking. and even if they were, it was midland, texas in the 60's. i lived there then. you know what else they did for fun besides driving? they'd (the teens, i was too young) would go out and ride oil derricks. ya know how they have that big lever thing that goes up and down? yep. they'd get on it and ride it. not a lot to do there. teens here in alabama die by the dozens cause they are young wild and inexperinced drivers. i not much care for the ms laura, but how dare anyone bring that up. she is decent people. al beit decent people married to an ass. still freaks me to realize i lived in midland at the same time as them. eeek.

Allen,

The Laura Bush story surfaced during the 2000 election and lasted for about half a news cycle. I sometimes cringe at the memory of driving on Chicago expressways at the age of 16. What were my parents thinking?

The only detailed account of the incident that I have found on the Internet is from Snopes:

snopes.com

American Spirit has kept the story alive on SI. I am willing to bet that he has posted it at least 50 times, without all of the facts, of course.

Regards,

Glenn
