As convoluted as the income tax is, at least people are used to it. My objection to VAT, national sales tax, flat tax, and so forth is not for what they are but that they might be added on to taxes that we already have. My state has a hefty sales tax but is bounded by one with no sales tax, one with a lower sales tax, and is not too far away from another with no sales tax. Some day I fear they will acquire the means to check my purchases in those states and tax me on it.
