Theoretically, the Fed is a non-political body. Ben's Chairman until 2010, and he's on the board until 2020. There are no recall provisions. A president could make life hard for him by public statements of no-confidence, but he could not force him to resign, it's not a cabinet post. And Ben would never go voluntarily. Certainly he could be replaced in the next cycle, though (if Volker is advising Obama, that's certainly a possibility).

Frankly, the only reason Volker got involved is he realizes how far the Fed has strayed. He managed to avoid holding his tongue for 20 years through all of Greenspan's excesses and finally had enough, IMO.
