They could throw a few years with a billion in losses at the segment and still come out ahead of what they would pay for Yahoo. They could ruin Yahoo just by undercutting the ad revenues, and revamping MSFT's own pathetic site.

I think Yahoo would have been better off making a deal, but MS would have just wasted some cash, and Goog would come out on top. It just wasn't very exciting, whichever way it went.
