Eric L. posts last week included this important one including revenue share:

As usual, Eric has the numbers. Nokia has been consistently gaining share YoY and will do so again next quarter.

but Art's question relates mostly to high end market share trajectories.

Art made a much more sweeping statement....saying that Nokia had "demonstrated over the past year that they can't compete with companies such as LG and Samsung". Even if you discount the statement for a bit of hyperbole, it still doesnt come close to being true.

Note that I'm not bullish on Nokia. I think they are late on their new platform introduction and that a 40% share isnt sustainable over the long-term. However, these sweeping statements about how Nokia cant compete with the Asian manufacturers have been proven false so many times that I think it is time that the proponents of the theories actually provide some evidence.

Do you think 3G carriers might want to rein Nokia in? Could competitors' strength have been caused by market effects controlled by the carriers as much as by user demands?

JMO, but I dont think the carriers are what is driving 3G market shares. This is a product driven market and right now, LG and Samsung have a much fresher lineup. The first review of the Samsung U900 are coming in and they look absolutely great. The LG Secret was also just announced and it too looks like a winner. This should be a good summer for Q, but the Christmas season is going to depend on what Nokia releases in the 2nd half. They promised a refreshed lineup during their quarterly conference call and now they will need to deliver....but even if they miss the Christmas season, I will need much more evidence to come to the conclusion that Nokia is doomed.
