So instead of trying to make the train - even though you have absolutely no idea if it has left the station

Steve, the entire train analogy was based on the notion that you believe with reasonable certainty that the train leaves at the appointed time. If "you have absolutely no idea if it has left the station," then the analogy doesn't apply.

you want to sit around and eat ice cream instead of trying to catch it?

If the train has left, yeah, ice cream is a better choice than chasing after it. That wasn't what I had in mind. I thought that fifteen minutes could be spent helping an old lady across the street or some such, but ice cream would do.

Remember, it cost you nothing to try, except healthier children and an end to the war.

Whoa. It cost you nothing? If it cost nothing, there would be no opposition to trying. The question on the table is how much would it cost and might that be better spent elsewhere.
