I helped a woman who had gotten a check from the UK for more than the rental on her Florida home the person allegedly wanted to rent. The person told her he held a position in an American company and was transferring.

He told he to deposit the check. When she noted it was for more than the first and last rent. He told her to keep half the difference for he trouble and send him back $2,000.00

She send me a scan of the official looking check and through the company he allegedly worked for I was able to determine that the check had their routing numbers and from an account in which they wouldn't notice the withdrawal very swiftly as it generally had many transactions and the 7K would not raise suspicions.

The company and the woman were both surprised. Apparently the company found 3 other checks had been cashed.

That is common now. Using the proper routing and account numbers you create a very nice looking check. The USA is way behind with and type of fool proof checking system.
