It absolutely does. There is a big difference between the Cold War and what is going on with Iran -- MAD.

We knew all along that Russia realized that we could and WOULD destroy them should they launch an attack against us. JFK showed them, in no uncertain terms, that we would not tolerate aggressive behavior.

You cannot rely on MAD with Iran or with any of these extremists, because their own survival is not an important consideration for them. Ahmedinejad is just as much an Islamic terrorist engaged in jihad as is bin Laden or Atta. You cannot depend on him to behave in a rational manner. One need only to listen to his threats against Israel to realize this.

Through decisive military action, we can quickly cripple their ability to threaten Israel (or, ultimately, us). Then, what they have to say really doesn't matter.

There is a huge difference between dealing with these fanatics vs. dealing with Russia; you really cannot reasonably draw any parallel between them.
