U.S. soldier dies from bomb injuries

An American soldier died of wounds sustained in a roadside bombing in eastern Baghdad, the U.S. military said today.

The bomb struck the soldier's vehicle during a patrol Friday evening, the military said.

The death raises to two the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq in May. At least 50 U.S. troops were killed in April — the deadliest month since September when 65 troops died.

Turks bomb Kurds over the Iraq border

Turkish warplanes bombed a key Kurdish rebel base deep inside Iraq for three hours overnight, Turkey's military and a rebel spokesman said Friday. A Kurdish Iraqi official said four rebels were killed.

Warplanes targeted Iraq's Qandil region as well as 10 other sites near the Iraq-Iran border in an operation that began Thursday night and stretched into early Friday, said Ahmed Danas, a spokesman for the PKK rebel group.

The PKK leadership is believed to be hiding in the Mount Qandil area about 60 miles from the Turkish border.
