"How could this ultra-rationalist—a believer in science and reason—so fully embrace a supernatural God watching over our lives? "

Earth to Brumar. This is common in scientists today. Why would it have been any different back then?

Yes, but I posted the article to counter the common charge that Jefferson was an atheist, agnostic, or deist, hostile to or skeptical of religion entirely.

-----------------------------------------------------------

"Yes, Thomas Jefferson—hero of modern liberals—believed in intelligent design."

So? That is a matter of faith. Where the objection comes in is when there are attempts to teach it as science. It isn't. It can't be. Because it is inherently unprovable.

He wrote of design as self-evident, not as being based on faith.

Personally I think atheistic naturalism shouldn't be taught as science either.

I believe in God too or something. I find it almost obscene to believe that current day man is the best thats out there in this expansive universe. I dont think we have the ability to comprehend whats out there. In the past we used organized religion to explain this stuff. For some of us, it wasnt enough. We turned to science but there are different kinds of science. Now science becomes the new religion that explains everything. On a micro level i guess this is true but macro, it aint enough for me. There is science out there that we dont have any understanding of. There is science out there that we wouldnt understand if it was explained to us. The smartest man on earth may very well turn out to be a dinosaur much less an ape on some other world. So perhaps its more accurate to believe in God whatever that is.

First shot at putting my thoughts out. Unedited. Dont know if i will believe this when i look at it later. Just food for thought.
