Well, some of the people made it out. The people who didn't suffered great tragedy at the hands of the North Vietnamese. I don't want to repeat this in Iraq.

We got a lot of nice nail shops and convenience stores out of Vietnamese refugees, and parts for my chain link fence, no doubt made of salvaged aluminum we sent over there in the 60s. OK, that was overly sarcastic. We also got some of our finest new citizens out of it, and very few whiners.

It's hard to know what we should have done in Vietnam. First, tell the truth about why we were there in the first place, which was a legitimate motive. That is, protecting our strategic interests in a vital corner of the world between the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Secondly, perhaps give more attention to making the South Vietnamese do more of their own fighting by increasing Special Forces to train and assist them, and downplaying conventional warfare tactics.

Thirdly, lay off micromanaging the war with untenable rules of engagement.

Fourth, once committed, go for victory not a humiliating exodus. Or fire JFK and LBJ before we even started.

Fifth, the beat generation with its unkempt behavior should own up to its contribution to failure. Yes, this is my generation, although I had a haircut.
