they get the oil argument for the gulf war which was a war for oil (50%) and a war against agression (iraqs). I tend to agree with you here. Democracy was the overreaching ideological reason and i guess some sort of federalism and viablity of the state would satisfy that somewhat. The immediate goal was wmd and i assume bush believed he had them and was/would develop nukes at his first opportunity. If those both in fact had succeeded 100% on mission accomplished day, plenfiful oil from a friend on the market was certainly one of the dividends to be expected along with modernization of iraqs oil and other facilities by US companies.

If one looks at the REAL reasons we are at war in Iraq, one stands out far above the others -- the idea of democratizing Iraq bringing about a more moderate [and free] influence in the region...

Funny that was never the stated reason before the war.... it was all mushroom clouds and plywood drones crossing the ocean.

As to the "democratizing" the end game is more likely to be the Talibanization of most of Iraq.

>By the way, the cost of the war to date has been 1/2 trillion, not 3 trillion

It's 3 trillion in the same way that Social Security is going to have a 4 trillion dollar deficit.
