all this branding and labeling of issues as left or right in a black or white sense is simply a ploy to get people to shut down critical thinking skills and accept dogma. We should be wiser than that.

Right on and this is what propelled Obama I believe. I say let the far left and far right go sit in a corner and have a time out. Time for the middle to give it a try.

one little teensey issue where you lean to the left?

Hubert Humphrey's crowning achievement was the National Forest Management Act, NFMA. The Wilderness Act was a good thing.

There hasn't been a left leaning issue since that makes any sense to me.

Universal health care appeals to the emotions, not to the intellect. It relieves people from looking out for their own interests. It's bad for them and bad for the country.

It's precisely because I use my critical thinking skills based on a few solid principles that I reject most of the ideas floating around out there left of center.

The government should manage federal land according to the best interests of the most people over the long run. It should build and maintain infrastructure that enables commerce and individual freedom. It should provide for the national defense. I probably forgot a few things, but there is precious little else.

Maybe you support social security for the elderly, or maybe you think union people have the right to organize, or maybe you think the government has some obligation to feed the most destitute or guarantee the treatment of poor children with major medical issues...surely something???

That's left? Seems pretty centrist to me.

Using universal health care as an example, what is the argument for not providing some measure of regular health care for the poorest among us?

The act of creating a false dichotomy, now that's, er, not centrist.

All this branding and labeling of issues as left or right in a black or white sense is simply a ploy to get people to shut down critical thinking skills and accept dogma. We should be wiser than that.

Yep.
