Carter won in 1976 not 1972. He beat Pres. Ford who had replaced Nixon when Nixon resigned. Ford had pardoned Nixon. That coupled with Watergate pretty much gave the election to Carter.

In 1980, Carter lost based on his terrible record. The last straw was the kidnapping of 50 Americans in Iran.
