But of course that idealized "then" never really existed except in a sharply edited version of the dreamer's imagination. As I've said before, I returned to a 50th year high school graduation reunion a few years back. While I had a terrific time, one of the more objectionable components was precisely that. Turns out the internet is full of files, images, etc., that remind us all just how wonderful the 50s were. I came away with clenched jaw disease. Closed doors to women in the work place. Deep, deep socially sanctioned, even legally approved segregation. And small town Texas high school football.
