The kind of box I'm talking about is the kind Wright used to assert that black people learned differently from white people and their brains operated differently. I can't remember the precise details and it's not worth it to me to research them, but it was precisely the point of view that was espoused by a moderator named Nickles or Nichols in a government sponsored multicultural conference I attended. In other words, black people are this way because. . . etc. And white people are . . .

I did not fit the box he tried to put white people in and I'm pretty sure black people don't universally fit the one he put them in either.

In other words, phrases like "White men can't jump," "Black people got rhythm", "Native Americans revere the earth mother," simply don't hold up for everybody in the class.
