Of course, this is the simplistic view of things. Iraq actually attacked Kuwait, if you'll remember -- at which time the Kuwaitis and the Saudis asked that we use our military resources to defend them. Since they are both allies, we agreed.

You will recall that Saddam entered into a ceasefire, which we abided by, but that HE vioated the terms of. Of course, at the time, we had a weak liberal president (that would be Clinton) who didn't react. After 9/11, it became clear that there were many reasons why Saddam should be removed, so we did it.

No, you can't boil it down to "Iraq Attacked Us" -- but there is a rationale that puts us there and it does make good sense.
