Personally, I think your programmer lacks a lot of imagination. I am guessing an undergrad. It is pretty clear that s/he has incorporated at spell checker and a response list. But everything else is sub-ELIZA. Definitely not post-grad material. The programmers for SA and Shorty are much better. They at least realize what a Turing test is.
