But they shall see my friend... just wait until August when NBC and the world have blanket coverage of the Olympics in Beijing there will be countless jounalists and video crews jaunting all over Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou.

China is proud to showcase the extraordinary and unprecedented infrastructure build out that they have achieved. A similar analogue in terms of national pride and the hunger for recognition of a nations best of breed accomplishments is historically similar to how happy the German's were to host the 1936 olympics in Berlin. The country had build the largest stadium venue every constructed, had the autobahn built which was years and years ahead of any superhighway anywhere else in the world, as well as having numerous other technologically impressive innovations they were proud to showcase. I am by no means saying that China today has the same type of meglomaniacal government that Germany had in 1936.

Of course in 1936, in retrospect, there were few discernable indications of what would follow... in regards to Hitler's political and military ambitions. However, China is in one way in a similar place in that they believe that they have earned significant global respect and in years to come they will DEMAND it. If you look at the Government in respect to Tibet, and the suppression of religious beliefs including killing the pacifist Falun Gong, who are evidently routinely entered into China's rather famed involuntary organ donation program .

I imagine one could engage in an exercise in conjecture that China is ahead of the Curve compared to Germany in 1936, in terms of the supression of decent, Censorship of the media, that included the complicity of companies as grand as GOOG. (which truly is a cutting edge excellent company); and is already killing those who they have religious and or philosophical differences with: witness Tibet and the Falun Gong.

BEIJING --Beijing Olympic organizers angrily disputed allegations of religious intolerance Thursday, saying Bibles and other religious items for personal use will be welcome at next summer's games -- except for the banned Falun Gong spiritual movement.

more stories like thisRecent reports by a religious news agency and European media saying Bibles would be banned at the Olympics touched off an outcry that prompted a U.S. senator to call the Chinese ambassador for an explanation and a Christian athletes group to protest the "deep violation."
