I have an older friend who vividly remembers WW2 and how people pitched in to help the war effort. She was talking to me the other day about how people didn't throw away shoes and get new ones, they had new heels put on. Think I heard somewhere that the dresses were shorter for they wanted to save fabric for the soldiers. All this is just a perfect example of how the American people can come together to work for a purpose they believe in. My mother used to tell me how meat was limited and they were told to eat a few bites of bread with each bite of meat. Also seemed gravy was always red - meaning tomato based for they had a garden.
